History (Canon)

Born and raised by a traditional family descended from a long line of ninja style weapons, Tsubaki came to Shibusen, a school run by the Shinigami to train people to protect the world and keep peace, to find a meister, and like most weapons, aims to be changed into a Death Scythe by collecting the souls of ninety nine corrupt humans and one witch soul. However, nothing could have prepared her for what she would find there, or more specifically who.

Her first day there, she sees someone bragging about his greatness on top of the school building, much to the annoyance of all the other meisters and weapons. Gradually, they all get fed up and walk away from the rambling idiot, but Tsubaki chooses to stay until he's finished speaking. Once he's done, she applauds him, being the only person left. He comes down to congratulate her for being the first person to recognise his greatness, and asks her name. After telling him and stating she's a weapon, he tells her he is a meister, and the name that would soon become very important to her: Black Star.

From some point after the encounter, Tsubaki and Black Star became partners in fighting against corrupt souls who might turn into Kishin, or Demon gods. Unfortunately, despite all their efforts, Tsubaki was unable to collect a single soul in the hope of becoming a Death Scythe. Or, to be more accurate, Black Star messeds up every mission they go on, mainly by jumping out on their targets and announcing himself to be at the level of a god, in a terrible obnoxious display. Tsubaki tells him repeatedly he has to show stealth as an assassin, but all he's concerned about is how great is, and how he wows his opponents 'on his stage' due to being so 'big'. Consequently, this often results in them failing missions, collecting zero souls, and almost getting killed just trying to make a quick escape. Despite all this, she is loyal to Black Star, even defending him when they fight Mifune,(who Black Star takes on in seeing how strong her is, and also in order to get to the witch he is protecting) as the swordsman criticises the meister saying he's only lasted this long because he has a skilled weapon. Upset by this, she insists that though Black Star is an idiot, he's determined and courageous, and that makes up for everything, making them a good team. She even worries at times Black Star will one day discard her for another weapon, though most of this is paranoia over his friendship with Soul, and how they bond so much due to their similar personalities.

After a while though, Tsubaki has to come to terms with her past, namely her older brother Masamune, the Fey Blade, or Demon Blade, who is on the path to becoming a Kishin. Knowing she's the only one who can stop him, Tsubaki goes on a mission with Black Star to find him, though not telling her partner what she has to do. While there, she learns a bit about Black Star, namely due to the hate the people of the town they come to have of the Star Clan, which Black Star is only living member of now. She sees the comparisons between them, and is comforted, gaining better understanding of him, and easing her uncertainity in seeing how Black Star doesn't let the past of the his Clan upset him. After managing to break Masamune's hold on a village boy who's body he was using thanks to Black Star using his soul wavelength, she goes inside her brothers soul by holding onto the Fey Blade, where they fight in order to gain control. Tsubaki knows if she loses, then her brother will take over her soul, devouring her, so she will no longer exist, but is willing to take the risk, since she's the only one who can stop him.

While fighting, Masamune tells Tsubaki how it's her fault he chose to try and become a Kishin. It stems back to their childhood, where Tsubaki would never voice her own opinion, always acting on what her brother would prefer, the example being that when he asked her what she wanted to play, though she wanted to play house, she didn't want to leave her brother out, so always said something they could play together, a game that her brother would prefer. He grew bitter of the fact she got some sense of superiority in being gracious to him, which worsened when Tsubaki was chosen to inherit the families weapon forms, an honour he believed was his, being the older child and also believing he was more skilled and deserving, though he was only given the katana form. He taunts her as he is about to absorb her soul, saying he hates that she pities him, saying she is just like her name, Tsubaki, the scentless flower, no real life, just quietly blooming without complaint before dropping to the ground and withering. However, just before she is absorbed, Tsubaki imagines Black Star being there, telling her that he knows that what Masamune says is wrong, giving her the drive to fight him off. She cries out that she does have a reason to exist, that she has a scent, and manages to overcome her brother, and absorb his soul, her very first one as well, as well as inheriting his weapon form and abilities. Before he disappears, Masamune makes peace with his sister, saying that the Tsubaki does have a nice scent.

Tsubaki returns to the outside world, finding Black Star waiting for her, bloody and beaten, and worried about her. While she smiles and says she's fine, he opens his arms and offers her a hug, causing her to cry and run into the embrace, apologising for getting him involved, as well as dealing with the loss of her brother. Black Star comforts her, before they are chased out by the villagers who still dislike the meister. Afterwards, they return to Shibusen, and Black Star also asks for assurance she will still be his weapon, to which she agrees. Unfortunately, while trying to show off the new Fey Blade mode to their friends, Black Star collapses from exhaustion, clearly not able to handle such a powerful weapon yet, while Tsubaki tries to help him regain consciousness. Still, it just goes to show you how even the most odd partners could make good, though for Tsubaki, it was fortunate she had a lot of patience, since it was unlikely Black Star's ego would ever shrink down to makes things easier for them.
